Training Your Puppy To Be A Social Pet

by Jospeh M. Sabol

One of the most important stages of the life of a pet dog is its puppy years. During this time, the puppy feels estranged about his environment. Because of this, the puppy could display two extreme behaviors. He may act inquisitively and become aggressive towards his companions and owners. Alternatively, he may feel intimidated about his surroundings and may grow up shy or not too confident.

With this, the members of the family must provide the puppy a fun and joyful medium during these crucial moments of his life. The goal here is for the puppy to be alert about the changes in his environment and to become confident in exploring new situations and places.

In order for your family to infuse this medium of fun and joyfulness in your home effectively, start the process the moment the puppy arrives. Allow every member of the family to meet and hug the new puppy. The idea here is to expose the young pet to every person in the family.

Little by little, make the pet comfortable with human contact. You may start by letting the puppy sit on your lap while stroking his back gently. You can touch his ears or tickle his tummy. However, just be careful not to hurt or frighten him. Let your friends and neighbors see your new puppy. At first, the puppy may tend to be shy to new faces, but the more people he gets acquainted with, the more confidence he gains.

Do not leave him in the company of pure strangers. Someone in the family should accompany the young dog in knowing new faces. The trick is to make the acquaintance comfortable for the puppy. Tell your friends to refrain from making gestures that will scare your little pet as well. If he experiences trauma in meeting strangers, he will most likely shy away from the activity in the future.

Taking the dog on a walk in the park is one of the most effective ways of exposing your little pet to the outside world. Your pet may behave differently now, as instincts start to set in. Just remember to make the whole experience fun and enjoyable for the little pet. Avoid traumatic and frightening situations, and your puppy will grow up to be a lovely social pet.
