House Breaking An Australian Shepherd

by Samantha Matheny

To begin house breaking your dog, you must get a crate (crate training greatly aids in house training!) for your dog to be in when you are not home or able to give him your full attention. Next you must decide where your dog can and cannot go in the house. It is imperative all family members know where the dog can and cannot go, and be consistent!

You should always feed your shepherd at the same times, every day. Your dog should be fed twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. Only leave his food on the floor for about 20 minutes at a time. Feeding your dog a schedule will ensure your dog will have to go potty on a schedule.

Your dog will tell you when he has to go potty, just pay attention to how he behaves. He may start pacing, whining, staring, or even pulling towards the door when he is ready to go potty. If you are having trouble identifying what your dogs behavior is telling you, try putting him on his leash and tie his leash to your waist. By doing this, your dog is always in your sight. This sets the boundaries of the house and also allows you to see when he is ready to go potty.

Always designate an area in the yard for you dog to go to the bathroom. This gives your dog a safe and comfortable place to relieve himself, not to mention it makes yard clean up much easier! Each time you go outside, at your scheduled time, with your dog attached to you on his leash, go to the area you want him to relieve himself. Before you know it, he will be leading you right to where he is supposed to go. Always be sure to praise your dog for going to the bathroom outside in the right area.

If you follow these few steps, you will have your dog house trained in no time. To read more on house training, visit House Breaking. You can also ask any questions at the forum!
