Help To Train Your Dog To Sit

by Jack Bingham

Step By Step Training

1) You first need a pocket full of your dogs favorite food treats ready in your pocket and out of sight of your dog.

2) Start your training in a room in your home that has few distractions and where you and your dog can concentrate on the training you are about to undertake.

3) You must make sure that you start all training when your dog is alert and you or your dog are not tired.

4) Call the dog by its name and while the dog is in a standing position, show the dog one of the food treats.

5) Place the food treat just out of reach of the dog, in front of the dogs nose, so that the dogs nose is pointing upwards. The idea is to hold the food just out of reach of the dog, but not so far that the dog is jumping up to reach the food - that would be a fundamental mistake and you really want to avoid that.

6) Bring the food treat just over your dogs head, towards the back of him, so that he naturally lowers himself into a sitting position.

7) The second your dog naturally gets into the sit position, say the words 'good dog' and simultaneously give your dog the food treat.
