Choosing A Dog Training Book

Are you having problems with your dog? Does your dog do inappropriate things? If so, then you can be sure that there are plenty of dog training books that will help your solve those problems. There's a huge range of dog training books available, because it's such a popular topic. Training your dog isn't always easy, so there's always people looking for solutions, which means money to be made selling that information.

One of the main things you need to look at when you're buying a dog training book is the level of experience of the person writing it. Because there are so many potential buyers, the reality is that people who know very little about training dogs are putting pen to paper, churning out a whole bunch of techniques that they've never actually tried for themselves, and selling it. But there are also other writers who've had years of dog training experience putting their thoughts and ideas on paper. That's a great way for you to learn from an expert at minimal cost. It's not always good to purchase a book that looks simple, either, because there's a lot more to dog training than a couple of simple techniques.

One book that has sold well is "The Dog Whisperer" by Paul Owens. I'm sure a lot of the sales come from the fact people have heard how successful the horse whisperer has been, and assume that this book must be full of valid techniques too. Personally, I have my doubts about that. This book only seems to contain a couple of reasonable techniques, and the rest of the content is "feel good" stuff about loving your dog and how good that will make you feel. Now, I'm all in favor of loving your dog and developing a positive relationship, but I just felt that I needed more concrete information after paying for the book.

"Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems" by Cesar Millan is completely different. Based on the extremely popular television series, this book showcases a huge range of possible problem behaviors, explanations as to why they occur, and solutions. Cesar has years of experience with dogs, and it shows. It's interesting, but so many dog problems are really dog owner problems! By retraining ourselves, we can improve the behavior of our dog. But at least Cesar doesn't make you feel guilty about the mistakes you've made.

Of course, it's all very well to read dog training books, but comfortable as it may be to read one with a cup of coffee in hand, it's not enough. You need to get out with your dog and start the training process.
